Almost the Real Thing Self-Tanning Gel

Good Product, Still Smelly though

Comparing to other self tanners, this one is relatively better. I like the consistency, the fact that the gel is nonfrangraced, and the colour you gain natural. Although after an hour after application you get the smell all self tanners have. Even when you shower after sleeping with it, the smell does not disappear. Quite lasting though and the price is good. Will recommend as it is slightly better than the others I' ve used before. (Posted on 16/06/2012)
No stinky smell :D

I really love this product. I am pale so this is a product to give me a little glow. I like that it's tinted so I can see where I have applied it and I like that I don't end up smelling like a stink bomb afterwards. The color last without going patchy for about 2-3 days for me. Great product! But I have a question, Can I use this on my face as well? Customer Care: Almost The Real Thing Self Tanning Gel is a perfectly to use on body and face. (Posted on 05/07/2011)
Very good but faible color

This is a very good self tan product, and I have tried a lot of them! The best thing is that it doesn't have a funny smell all other products have. With it you get a very even and nice colour, but it is also a little weak, so if you are pale as a wall, you will need to use it one day and the flowing in order to achieve a medium tan. 1. Take a quick shower; do not soak.
2. Use a body shampoo to prevent soap film.
3. Exfoliate in the shower, (try baking soda mixed with water, Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser or a Paula's Choice Cleanser), but don't overdo. Do not shave.
4. Towel dry completely.
5. Apply a light layer of moisturizer.
6. Apply Almost the Real Thing Self-Tanning Gel evenly and smoothly, covering one area at a time. Begin with a dime-sized amount and apply in thin layers, adding slightly more product if a deeper color is desired.
7. Wash hands thoroughly to avoid tan palms and cuticles.
8. Use no additional skin-care products at least an hour before or after application.
9. Wait an hour before dressing or getting into bed to avoid stains.

Did You Know?
Self-tanner can collect over creases and dry or rough skin, so use less over those areas or use a paper towel to dab off the excess. Self-tanners do not protect from sun damage so you must still apply a sunscreen.

How long does the color last?

That depends on how well it "takes" on your skin. Results often vary widely with the same self-tanner. On some the color may last a week or more, while others find it lasts 2 days or fewer.

How does using an AHA or BHA affect the results I get from using Almost the Real Thing Self-Tanning Gel?

There are pros and cons to combining any exfoliant (AHA or BHA exfoliant or topical scrub) with a self-tanner. Our self-tanner contains dihydroxyacetone (a derivative of sugar that turns skin cells a shade of brown), which affects only the uppermost layers of skin. Exfoliants affect these same layers and, as a result, the exfoliant sloughs off the skin cells affected by the self-tanner, thus reducing how long your "tan" lasts. That's the negative. The positive is that when the skin is smoother (the benefit of using a well-formulated exfoliant) you get much more even-toned results from the self-tanner. Unless you're willing to avoid using an AHA or BHA product or a topical scrub when trying to obtain and maintain a self-tan, the only solution is to compromise. That may involve using the BHA or AHA lotion less often (such as two or three times per week rather than daily) or applying Almost the Real Thing Self-Tanning Gel more often to maintain the level of color you like.
